Overview and Purpose        
The purpose of this activity is to inform nurses of evidence-based prevention, detection, and management of vesicant extravasations so that they can incorporate this information in clinical practice.  This activity will enrich the oncology nurse’s contribution to healthcare by providing the nurse with advanced information about vesicant extravasation.

Target Audience
This article is intended for staff oncology nurses, supervisors, and research nurses involved in the care of patients with cancer. The level of RN Learner for this activity is intermediate to advanced.    



Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this online continuing nursing educational activity, the participant will be able to:
1. Identify three (3) causes of vesicant extravasation from implanted ports.
2. Describe the role of the patient in vesicant extravasation prevention, detection, and management.
3. List the signs and symptoms of a vesicant extravasation.
4. Review institutional policies for managing vesicant extravsastions and update as
     needed to include Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved antidotes and treatments .
